The VOID at Downtown Disney & Disney Springs
As new technologies in virtual reality grow, the ability to transport you into new worlds and experiences becomes more real and exciting. Nowhere is that more true or amazing than at The VOID located both at Downtown Disney in California & at Disney Springs in Florida. Here you can be transformed into the world of Star Wars as an undercover rebel spy or into Wreck-It Ralph and Vanellope’s video game world. Now, I have only done the Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire experience at Downtown Disney but I can assure you that this was one the most interactive, immersive, and truly amazing experiences I have ever done. There is truly nothing like it that I have ever experienced in my life! As this is a virtual reality experience, I will do my best to describe what this was like but truly the only way to really understand is to do it!
What to Expect
Last summer, I was able to go to VOID with my husband and parents and honestly, I had no idea what to expect going into it. All I knew was that it was virtual reality, which I had done before. You must have a reservation for this experience in advance because spots do tend fill up pretty fast, especially in the summer. For the Star Wars experience, you are only allowed to enter in groups up to 4 people ages 10 years and up. Everyone must be at least 48 inches and children must accompanied by someone 16 years and older. When you and your party show up for your reservation time at the VOID, you all sign waivers and then are escorted inside to be given information about your experience.
You are each outfitted with a VR helmet and vest which weighs about 20 lbs. Everything is adjusted and you are then debriefed on your mission by none other than Cassian Andor from Rogue One. He tell you that you are undercover rebel spies dressed as Stormtroopers. Your mission is to infiltrate an Empire base on the planet of Mustafar and try to find a hidden artifact inside. What comes next can only be described as truly immersive. You freely move through different rooms and are encountered by sounds, smells, things to touch and pick up, as well as heat. As a team, you try to navigate through different dangers that require you to use a blasters, like laser tag. There is also a point where you come face to face with a dreaded and famous Star Wars villain who truly brought a chill down my spine when I saw him face to face.
Every moment of this experience had me convinced that I was indeed a rebel spy in this amazing world and dealing with all the things spies would have to deal with. Every extra layer to this experience was truly amazing and made you feel like you were actually there. I really wish I could go into more detail but honestly, it is sometimes better to not tell everything and experience it for yourself.
If you wanted to experience either the Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire or Ralph Breaks VR, it is about $34.95 a person and requires a reservation. On the Disneyland or Walt Disney World websites, just search the VOID Experience and you will be directed to their website that has reservation times and updated prices.
