The Princess Purpose: Jasmine
Disney is full of strong, courageous, driven, beautiful, and powerful woman. It is these women that inspire young girls to be whatever they want to be and that they have the potential to accomplish their dreams. I mean, have you seen any Dream Big, Princess promotional material? Of course, we don’t just mean the princesses. You have heroines like Meg, Jessie, Wendy, Black Widow, and Rey who became strong female leads and represent so much more than being the damsel in distress. Disney has done an incredible job providing representation and inspiration to girls around the world. We thought it would be a fun idea to highlight some of our favorite heroines of the Disney universe.
Each sister has their very favorite princess of course, but together we discovered that each of us has a princess who we are most like. As for me, my sisters think that I am most like Jasmine!
The movie may be called Aladdin, but we all know that without Jasmine, there wouldn’t even be a movie! Here are some of the reasons Jasmine is a awesome Disney heroine.
Her refusal to do what a man tells her to do, simply because they feel it is best for her. We see this time and time again in the film. She won’t marry off because her father says she has to, she will always do the right thing even if the palace guards will tell her father on her. She won’t listen to the evil Jafar because she doesn’t trust him even though her father does. She isn’t controlled and she will not be manipulated, even when the handsome and rich Prince Ali shows up, she makes her own choice to get to know him once she suspects who he really is. Go Jasmine!
Her drive to constantly do what is right. We first see this in the market when she saves Aladdin, even though she knows he is stealing. She didn’t feel the punishment fit the crime and stands up for him. She willingly puts herself in harm's way with Jafar in order to destroy his power. She works to save her father, even though it was his own stupidity that got them in the Jafar situation in the first place. She refuses to become a sexual object in men’s eyes, but she knows how to use her beauty to her advantage.
Her sass. While some parents may question why this would be a great “woman quality” to have their little girl look up to, it means she will always speak her mind. She doesn’t let anyone talk for her, think for her, or act for her. She has her own opinion and creates her own story. She is the perfect example for a woman who stands up for what she believes in, even in a world surrounded by people doubting her. Luckily Aladdin realizes how special she is and loves her for it.
For Jasmine, she shows her princess potential through her strength, determination, and understanding. Let's all try to have a little Jasmine in us!
