Most Underrated Disney Movies Ever
All Disney movies are synonymous with magic, great storytelling, great lessons, and usually amazing music. If you ask the average person what their favorite Disney movie is, most will say famous or popular movies like Frozen, The Little Mermaid, or Aladdin. But there are some underrated or forgotten movies that get pushed into the back of your entertainment center or left on the shelf at the grocery store. Today, I want to take those movies out, blow off the dust, and make my case for why these underrated movies are just as good as Tangled or The Lion King!
Just in case you’re wondering how I am picking these movies, I am basing my opinion off of what movies don’t have a big presence in the Disney world, meaning presence in the parks or merchandise.
I’m going to be honest about being biased about the first two movies on this list, Hercules and the Hunchback of Notre Dame, because they are my top 2 favorite Disney movies of all time. The fact that they are even on this list of underrated Disney movies just boggles my mind. I mean I dedicated a whole blog post to why Hercules is so awesome! (It’s my “Who Put the Glad in Gladiator”post if you are interested in reading more).
Hercules is such an underrated movie for many reasons but I am going to stick to just 2 reasons because, again, I have a whole post just about this movie. Hercules has one of the BEST music of any Disney movie period because it is so unique in its use of gospel music! Every time I watch it, I just boogie and clap the whole time because it is so fun to sing to! I mean you try to listen to Zero to Hero and not tap your foot! I dare you! The other reason Hercules is such an underrated movie is the characters are so relatable and funny! I mean HADES come on! He is the ultimate sassy, hilarious villian that also scares the pants off you at times! Hercules’ naivete and adorable awkwardness around Meg coupled with his determination and courage make you root for him the whole movie. Meg, with her wounded but sassy attitude makes her relatable to anyone who has dealt with heartbreak and still put on a happy face. I could honestly go on and on about this movie but I will leave it here!
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Again, I am biased about this movie because it is my second favorite Disney movie but this movie does not receive enough credit for its AMAZING music and visual representation of the real Notre Dame cathedral in Paris. I mean the Imagineers were spot on! The Hunchback of Notre Dame’s lesson of accepting people no matter what they look like on the outside is a lesson that I think needs to be brought up especially today. Quasimodo’s desire to be accepted in the real world and Esmeralda's courage to stand up for the outcasts again are lessons that need to be remembered as our world continues to plunge into hate and violence. The sheer beauty of this message makes this movie unforgettable!
Most of the Cartoon Sequels: Pocahontas 2, The Little Mermaid 2, Aladdin: The Return of Jafar, The Hunchback of Notre Dame 2, The Lion King 2, and many others
I could dedicated a section of this post to everyone of these sequel movies but let’s be honest, no one wants to read something that long! I will simply say that I am big fan of knowing what happens next once a story ends. Each of these sequel movies give you an unique insight into what could have happened after each of their original movies ended. I am particularly fond of the Hunchback of Notre Dame 2 (no surprise these) because I was so disappointed after the first movie when Quasimodo didn’t get the girl. Watching Quasimodo being so cute in falling in love with Madeline just makes my heart soar that he finally found someone to love him back! Each has their own unique perspective on what would happen next to some of our favorite characters which I think makes it a movie worth watching!
This movie is underrated for the simple reason that it is a fun retelling of the Robin Hood story with hilarious characters like King John the Thumb Sucker and Little John the Crossdresser! Robin Hood’s bravery and willingness to stand up for what’s rights reminds that if we see something wrong or someone needs help, we should help!
This underrated flick is a favorite of my husband Cameron for the simple reason that is a action flick with robots, lasers, and space fights all rolled into a fun retelling of the Treasure Island story. Also, who ever didn’t have a crush on the bad boy Jim with his ponytail and solar sailer?? I know I did! I always like movies that take a unique turn on a classic story and put it into a new world.
The Emperor’s New Groove
Pull the lever Kronk! If this is one of the most quoted parts of this movie, then I have no sense of humor at all! The crazy antics of Kuzco, Yzma, Pacha, and Kronk make me wonder why this is so underrated! I mean Kronk singing his own theme music COME ON!! If I ever need a good laugh, this is always my go to movie!
Meet the Robinsons
Another movie I have no idea why it is underrated is the Meet the Robinsons! The Walt Disney quote at the end about “Keep Moving Forward,” is like my motto for life! Lewis’ quest to find his real mom only to find his family throughout the movie just makes me remember how much I love my family and how they make life amazing. The creative story that weaves together Lewis’ background and future makes this movie unique and inspired!
Atlantis: The Lost Empire
Again, another example of creative and unique Disney storytelling at work with this underrated movie. The styling of the scenery and characters set this movie apart from others of its kind! After seeing this movie, I always want to go find Atlantis and get a crystal of my own!
Hope you enjoyed all my opinions on this! Enjoy one of these movies the next time you need a pick me up!
